Our first speaker of the semester was Phillip Alexander, a fairly recent graduate of North Carolina Central University who came back to offer his insight on working in sports news as a post-grad. He first got his foot in the door through his WRAL internship and move into sports news. As he is continuing to build his resume to work towards his ultimate goal he is working on his side hustles of Motivational Mondays, a social media campaign, as well as Modern Juice, a male professional accessory brand.
After providing some background of himself, Alexander then went on to provide some food for thought to us as Mass Communications undergraduate students.
Get more involved
We need to take every moment in college as an opportunity. Being involved helps students to stand out on their resume through experience and leadership skills. It also builds character and helps you to learn to work with others.
Take it all seriously
In reference to all of our classes in Mass Communications, we need to accept each class as an opportunity to grow as an individual as well as to learn the field in which we want to pursue work.
Time management
Time management is a skill that is necessary in order to be a success in the media industry. When you are able to manage your time you will have to ability to increase your productivity as well as your proficiency in the skill.
Hyperfocus & laser focus
Narrowing your mindset on a specific goal helps you with achieving said goal. You must cut off all distractions around you that don't ultimately bring you to your ultimate goal.
Networking
You need to reach out to the people that come out and speak because they can help build the connections you need to be a success. He even went on to say that "your network is your net worth."
Overall it was a pleasure to get to listen to a young alumni providing an insight on life after college as well as how to reach your ultimate goals.
