One of our class speakers this semester was Keith Sexton, an alum, who works an accountant for production companies. His visit helped to show a new outlook on what all goes into a film production.
After graduation, Sexton began his career at MTV as a production accountant and continued to build his connections, ultimately bringing him to Atlanta, Georgia. When asked on how one can get their foot in the door with the film industry, he replied with, "start off as a Production Assistant."
A Production Assistant is an entry-level position that works along-side the Director and/or Producer that assists with the process of the production ensuring that everything runs smoothly.
Sexton also noted that working in the film industry is also a form of freelance work where individuals make $650-750/hr. You can also work as a Post PA or Assistant Editor which are union positions. Sexton really encouraged us to get to a union position to keep ourselves in a good financial standing.
After the Q&A, Sexton encouraged us to reach out, as he serves as the President of the Atlanta Alumni Chapter, he would do his best in ensuring that a fellow eagle isn't left alone.
Overall I enjoyed Sexton's energy, and I will definitely reach out to him and bridge that connection.
