So I recently came to the decision that I would be going to graduate school to pursue my Ph.D. upon graduation. And as I begin to create my "Road to Grad School" Checklist, I came to the realization that I really need to study for this GRE if I'm trying to receive a fellowship opportunity at the top schools of my choice.
The GRE is basically the SAT of college that you need in order to go to graduate school. Most grad programs require your GRE scores in order to be considered for admission. It's 3 hours and 45 minutes long, and costs $205. Overall, the GRE seems pretty overwhelming and pricey to me, so I need to make this exam worth my money.
The last time I took a large test like this was my junior year of high school, and I never looked back. Thinking back to how I studied for the SAT and ACT back in high school I remembered that I purchased the study book and flash-cards, so I did just that.
I purchased the Kaplan "GRE Prep Plus 2020" book for about $25 on Amazon, a great discount in comparison to its original price of about $40. The book itself includes two practice exams, provides test taking strategies, ans practice questions. The book also does a great job of breaking down how the GRE is scored, what colleges look for in your GRE, how to apply for Grad School, andd much more, including their online option that they provide.
On the website I am able to take a GRE diagnostic exam to determine my base score and develop my study schedule to implement throughout this summer and semester. The online platform also includes video explanations when a concept is just too hard to grasp.
I also downloaded a GRE Vocabulary app by Magoosh that I've been looking over during my down time and when I feel like my Twitter time could be just more effectively.
When I take my diagnostic exam this weekend, I will determine my study schedule and find the best way to incorporate it into my weekly schedule. My ultimate goal is to score at least a 160 on both sections and at least a 5.5 on the written portion of my exam. It's ambitious, but I believe that it can be done. This fellowship isn't going to work for itself.
